DEVELOPING STANDARDS
SWASA standards development process is in line with the principles defined in Annex 3 of the WTO/TBT Agreement (“Code of good practice for the preparation, adoption and application of Standards”), itself based upon the latest version of ISO/IEC Guide 59 (E) Code of good practice for standardization. The TBT “Code of good practice” establishes a framework for the process that needs to be followed in accordance with these rules and forms the basis of approval of documents as national standards.
The standards development process has 8 steps beginning with proposal stage where the public or any stake holder can propose a project (standard) for development as a national standard. The Technical department will then bring together Technical Committees which comprise of stakeholders ranging from regulators, industry, consumers and academia to deliberate on the standards. The process ends when the standards are gazetted as national standards.
SWASA adopts standards from international organisations like the International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO), the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) to name a few.
